What Causes Bed Bugs?

We're guessing that just about every single person who has to deal with bed bug bites wants to know what causes bed bugs. Why do you have bed bugs? How did they get here? Where did they come from? The simple truth is that if there are bed bugs in your living space they were brought there. Either by you or by someone else. That's why they are there. They will hitch a ride on your body or clothes, in your suitcase, on a pet - they're very versatile. So, how they got there can be hard to figure out sometimes. If you don't figure it out, you may have to deal with them multiple times!

As far as where they came from goes, that's the real secret sauce here. The fact is that bed bugs are found just about everywhere throughout the world. Any place where people go, there can also be bed bugs. If you can figure out where you picked them up - where they came from - you can simply never go back to that place. That's really the very first step to controlling bed bugs - don't go where they are. Of course, you won't know they are there unless you see them or someone tells you they are there. That's what makes it tough. At the end of the day, the question isn't really what causes bed bugs. It's where did they come from?

What Causes Bed Bugs?

So, besides being careful about where you go, what else can you do to mitigate a potential bed bug invasion? Bed bug mattress covers are just critical as far as a long term line of defense goes. A good quality mattress encasement really does make a difference. If you do unwittingly bring bed bugs home with you, the last thing you want is for them to infest your bed. Once they get established in your mattress and box springs it can be very difficult to get rid of them without the use of pesticides, which we don't like on our beds. This is one place where you don't want to cut corners. Cheapo mattress protectors don't last very long, are uncomfortable and aren't always as effective as you need them to be. Get good ones - it's a very good investment.

You may also want to use bed bug traps, also known as monitoring devices. These can be an invaluable tool when traveling as they can alert you that there is a bed bug population present. And keeping a few in your bedroom at home will help you get an early jump on the problem should you be unfortunate enough to bring them home with you. Once bed bugs are there, they don't just go away, so early detection can be huge.

One thing we can tell you is this: what causes bed bugs to be a long term problem is a lack of action. The sooner you get rid of them, the cheaper it will be and the less stress you'll have.
